Population of Dhodia at present about 1500000 (2007 election data) and most of them live in the Southernmost tip of Gujarat, mostly under the districts of Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Dangs as well as the union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Some Dhodia are also reported to live in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan in India.Dhodia are also known by alternate names like Dhobi, Dhori, Dhore, Dhowari and Doria.
In this webpage the Dhodia population in Gujarat and Maharashtra as a cohesive group has been described, mostly because they share a common culture, language and a close proximity.
(Not much information is available on the Dhodia communities of the other regions. I am actively seeking more information on this and if any comes your way, please share it with me)
A tribal population called Dhodia / Dori is also reported in Pakistan. However a report says that the Dhodia in India are not the same as Dori in Pakistan. It might well be that there is a remote ancestral connection, but the tribes have subsequently diverged culturally with the passage of time so as to be completely different. The Dhodia in Pakistan follow Islam and they speak mostly sindhi language. Some of these also speak multani, kacchi, koli, wadiyara.
Today, many Dhodia have migrated to various parts of Gujarat as well as other States of India. Some Dhodia have spread their wings to different corners of the world. However, those that have migrated are a very small insignificant number and most of the Dhodia today are still struggling with trying to integrate with the modern society which is rapidly becoming more and more competitive.
