Mr. Bhagyendra Patel is an assistant editor at National Book trust, India. From a small village in Bhinar to a Gujarati voice at All India radio, Bhagyendra has come a long long way through sheer hardwork. He is also an awesome painter and in the college days used to paint advertisement boards to fund his education.

The Little Dance Master
She is 12 years old and already a Bharatnatyam Arangetram (the highest degree in dance). The daughter of Mr. Hiren and Mrs. Hetal Patel is a 7th class student from Lourdes convent, Aathwa, Surat. She has done “Kalashree “ She is the pride of the institute of classical dance Bhratnatyam, SURAT and her dance guru Mrs. Dimpal Deputy. After graduating with the highest honour in dance and joining the Bharatnatyam Institute at Piplod as a Dance teacher, she must be the ONLY and YOUNGEST teacher in the community. But this isnt the full story of her achievement. She also has the credit of being one of the top rankers in her school, a third prize winner at the Science Olympiad and Special Price winner in UC-MAS. She is a daughter that does not only her parents and school but the Dhodia Community and also our national proud! Please join us in congratulating Vaidarbhi.

Anti-Alchohol campaign at Anaval

In the Dhodia community, drinking is a vice. When social drinking becomes an addiction it brings on erosion of fiances and destruction of
individual, their home and the society too. An anti drinking campaign was organized at Anaval. Below are the pictures.
Medical Camp: Medical Association of Dhodia Samaj and Samast Dhodia Samaj
Medical Association of Dhodia Samaj in collaboration with Samast Dhodia samaj organised a medical camp in Rumla. A number of renowned doctors from the Samaj found time to help the poor and the needy in the community and outside. Their services were given free of cost. Our sincere thanks to the doctors.

Physical fitness is a trademark of the tribals and YASH, the 6 year old from Kos Village of Mahuva taluka, Surat exhibits it to the hilt. This young master performed 993 cartwheels in 30 minutes on the high School ground at Anaval on 25th may 2008.
Dayaljibhai: The Artist
Tapping on the information provided by one of our volunteers, we sought to seek more information on Mr. Dayaljibhai. This 56 year old sculptor from Rabda village of valsad district is very camera shy. He postponed giving me a picture during my last visit to the tribal museum at Gujarat Vidyapeeth where he works as a freelancer. This perky artist has the entusiasm of 25 year old and he escorted us around the Museum at Tribal Research and Training Institute where his work has been showcased. The link to the webpage at vidyapeeth shows his work. The huts and the sculptures that you see in this link have been handcrafted by Dayaljibhai himself. Incidentally this artist was approached by Mr. MF Hussain. Hussain requested him to make a potrait of Madhuri Dixit. Tribal art is so much at the core of his creativity that this gentleman refused to entertain any other options.

AHMEDABAD:A guy would give anything for a couple of minutes with the 'dhak dhak' girl, but not Dayalji Patel. This 56-year-old chose to be with Bhil women instead. This sculptor, a graduate from MS University of Baroda, spent a lifetime sculpting tribal men and women out of earth, for the Tribal museum at the Gujarat Vidyapith. In September 1999, famous painter M F Husain was visiting the Amdavad ni Gufa while making the controversial film 'Gaja Gamini' starring Madhuri Dixit and wanted him to make a sculpture of Madhuri carrying a pot on her head and a child in her arms. The assignment could have meant some 'exclusive time' with the Bollywood screen sizzler. Patel simply refused. Apparently, he did not want to take up commercial assignments and "he was too preoccupied with his tribal works". In the film , made in 2000, Madhuri was shown in various forms as the eternal woman. Some sculptors whom Husain met in the city recommended Patel to him and the artist then visited the Vidyapith museum. So impressed was he by Patel's works that he offered him the contract. Patel's creations also feature in tribal museums at Dharampur and Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. He has made life-like sculptures of various tribes in Gujarat and other states. Husain had also wanted Patel to make a fibreglass sculpture of a woman depicting India for one of the sets of the film. Patel, an expert on tribals, has worked extensively with fibreglass and Plaster of Paris. However, his favourite material has been terra cota and Plaster of Paris. "It gives you a flexibility for work, allowing you to make life-like statues," he says. The process of making a statue is a painstaking one. "I need an object to get inspiration. I am still in touch with many of my models," he says. After that, starts working on the clay model that needs heat and proper condition. The mould is made from clay into which the Plaster of Paris parts are cast. "If done properly, it can be maintained for about 100 years," he says.
Ph.D. Thesis on Dhodia at Gujarat Vidyapeeth
A Ph.D. thesis on the Dhodia is about to be submitted for the award of the Degree sometime soon. The researcher has addressed several issues regarding the economic and educational development in the Dhodia Community. We look forward to its publication.
